A very adaptable species that will grow in a wide range of shaded conditions. It does spread by rhizomes and can be somewhat aggressive in richer soils without competition. The flowers attract many different species of butterflies, moths, bees, wasps, flies, and beetles. Larval host for the Pearl Crescent (Phyciodes tharos)butterfly and other composite family generalist. Also a host for many species of moths.
